Top three sure thing hockey bets at the 2010 Olympics

February 1, 2010 in Canada, Hot Picks & Tips, Russia, USA by hockey

So what’s wrong with playing it safe at the 2010 Olympics?

The upcoming Men’s Olympic hockey tournament may offer some exciting long-shot betting opportunities, where smart bettors with good information can make a mint, but that doesn’t mean the smart bettor should ignore the easy money.

Lets face it, there are some games where the outcomes are all but decided. Sure you’re not going to get a huge thousand to one payout like you would backing a long-shot, but you’re taking on practically no risk, so the rewards are logically smaller. Sports betting, in many ways is a lot like the stock market. Your returns are commensurate to your risk, but that doesn’t mean that only risk-crazy lunatics are playing the market.

Quite the contrary actually, as most of the best investors, like most of the best bettors, are the ones who know how to spread their risk across several investments. Sure you gamble on some high-risk penny stocks, but you make the easy small dollars where you can.

That brings us to our list of the top 3 sure thing Olympic hockey bets.

1)Canadacan_medium vs. Norwaynor_medium – Feb 16th

Canada are heavy, and I mean centre of a mother-fracking black hole heavy, favorites to win this game. Odds makers a pegging Canada at -980 to win, meaning you’d have to invest $980 to win a measly $100. Sounds like a bum deal right? WRONG. Think about is this way. That’s a 10.2% return if Canada wins. Where else in known universe are you going to find a 10% return on an investment with a turnover time of a few hours. Now to those of you who are complaining that the risk isn’t worth the potential reward, I ask what risk? This is Canada vs. Norway we’re talking about. Canada are 1 in 2 favorites to win the entire tournament and Norway didn’t even qualify for the last two Olympics. They don’t even have a single NHL player in their roster. This game is Canada’s first of the tournament and it’s going to be a blowout as the boys in red and white give the home-town crowd something to get fired up about.

2)USA usa_mediumvs. Norway nor_medium- Feb 17th

Wow, poor Norway, I’m not giving them much credit am I? Well, quite frankly, they don’t deserve much. This February 17th match has Team USA favored at -780. Again, that means if you’d have to risk $780 to win your measly $100. Now when you look at it from an investment perspective though it’s an even more impressive 12.8% return. For what is once again all but guaranteed to be a sure thing. Team USA are fourth favorites to win the entire tournament and Norway is still going to be reeling from the brutal schelacking they’ll have suffered at the hands of Team Canada the night before.

3)Russiarus_medium vs. Latvialva_medium – Feb 16th

Since the fall of the Berlin wall and the demise of the Soviet Union, the only cold war Russia has been fighting is their battle with Canada for global hockey supremacy. Latvia on the other hand came in dead last in the 2006 Olympic Games with an 0-4-1 record and when the played the Russians in 2006 they got thumped to the tune of 9-2. If anything the Russian team this year is better, and the Latvian team worse. The Russians are pegged at -710 for this matchup, which means one last time, to get your measly $100 you’d have to wager $710. That’s still 14.1% return.

Now lets say you put a $1000 on each of these three games, assuming pigs don’t suddenly starting flying around and hell hasn’t yet frozen over, you’re walking away $370 richer. Not bad for a days work.
